Where to find amazing free photos

This is something I only discovered myself recently. It’s so good I had to share it.

Stock photos. They ain’t cheap! Especially if you have an already limited marketing budget. But thanks to this post by Medium writer Dustin Senos, I discovered a new world of high quality, free photos that can be used any way you want.

In his post, Dustin provides a list of links to 15 or so free stock photo sites. To make it even easier for you to find great images, I’ve picked my favourite six sites from Dustin’s list and have written a bit about each one.

Full list

Enjoy. You’ll never have to use a cheesy or expensive stock photo again.

1. Little Visuals

This great site allows you to enter your email address to receive a zip file of seven high resolution images direct to your inbox every week. It’s that simple.

2. Unsplash

Unsplash has a large archive of some simply stunning photographs. 10 new photos are added every 10 days. At the time of writing, there are 400 photos to choose from. No-frills brilliance.

3. New Old Stock

A collection of some truly beautiful vintage photographs that are free of copyright restrictions. New Old Stock is also a site you can become engrossed in, looking back in time and getting lost in the incredible images. Outstanding.

4. Gratisography

Gratisography is a collection of awesome and eclectic photos taken by New York based artist Ryan McGuire. New photos seem to be added regularly and it’s a simple click-to-download format. Thanks, Ryan.

5. IM Free

Part of IM-Creator, IM Free is yet another great collection of high quality photos that are completely free to use. All that’s asked for is attribution to the creator. The photo I’ve used above was taken by Dom Crossley.

One advantage of IM Free over the other sites listed here is that the images are split up into categories, making it easier and faster to find the sort of photo you’re after. A fantastic resource.

6. Jay Mantri

Designer Jay Mantri has made a Tumblr with some excellent photos, mostly with a Californian theme. He adds seven new photos to the site every Thursday. Like Unsplash, this site is awesome for its simplicity and great photos.

Well, there you have it. Excellent free stock photos do exist. I never want to see a crappy photo in a blog again.

And don’t forget, these are only six out of the 15 or so sites that Dustin listed in his original post, so be sure to check that out if you’re hungry for more.

My thanks for this post go to Dustin Senos for enlightening me, and to the creators of the six websites I’ve listed above. You’re all awesome.

Has this post been useful? Do you know of any other great free stock photo sites like these ones? If so, please leave a comment and spread the word.
